My Thoughts About The Recent Changes in Google Photos

I want to speak out my feedback about Google Photos. I have two, one is for the feature and the other was my concern regarding the storage.

--------------------------

The first is that I suggest putting a feature in the Photos app in which you can favourite and un-favourite photos by batch, a feature only found in the web version of Photos.

--------------------------

Here's my second feedback. I want to address my concern about the way Google ended the unlimited storage of Google Photos. As I'm writing this, I'm also reading the subscriptions Google One provided and I'm analysing or considering whether or not to upgrade my Google account to Google One. Also, I'm reading Google's side about this decision in this article https://blog.google/products/photos/storage-changes/

Because as a picture-smart guy, I'm a photo-collector which is one of my hobbies starting in 2013, I collected lots of Photos thousands per year and from 2015, I backed them up in Google Photos, from iCloud I moved to Google Photos because of its unlimited storage which it's ended in June 1st 2021. Many people are dismayed by this news, especially me who was a hobbyist image collector that decided to use Google Photos for backing up my collected images.

As I read the subscriptions in Google One, I compared whether I can afford them in the future or not. I have to make my final decision within a year because the images I backed up consume storage faster than I expected leaving only a year of storage left. I'm considering that once there is 2 GB of storage left, it is time to go to subscription.

Now I'm thinking of moving to another cloud storage provider when there are only 2 GB left, which will be the Google Photos' big rival, which is IDrive Photos. I got interested there because they can provide unlimited storage for Image collecting with just 10 USD (750 Php) of a yearly subscription. They keep the IDrive and IDrive photos separated, in which IDrive provides a maximum of GB to TB of storage with yearly subscriptions while IDrive Photos provide unlimited storage with a yearly subscription. This is what I like very much about IDrive. The problem here is that IDrive Photos has very few features. They can back up photos in HD but they still have no Albums feature, no photo-editing features. Just Favourites feature is what they have currently. And I reached out to add more features in IDrive Photos to beat Google Photos. They answered that they will, but there is no estimated time on completing it.

Here are some of the links about IDrive Photos and the fact that these articles are suggesting people use IDrive Photos instead of Google Photos

Synology Photos is also a great alternative with the app as same as Google Photos, but it requires hardware to work. And it's not saving on the cloud but rather on a hard drive going cloud.

Also now, I'm thinking about Google One's Subscription which can provide 100 GB with just 889 Php/year, 200 GB with just 1,499 PHP/year and 2TB for 4,799 Php/year. I can subscribe to that with the privileges of using the features of Google Photos the IDrive Photos still doesn't have, but aside from I don't like the hectic price of the maximum subscription, I DON'T REALLY LIKE ONE THE CONSEQUENCES OF running out of space especially when I failed to pay the subscription, which is I cannot send and receive emails. I'm fine when I subscribe to a 2 TB yearly plan but I don't like the price, especially since I'm just using it to collect photos.

I heard news wherein this unlimited storage feature of Google Photos is returned but it is only for T-Mobile users in America. What an unfair fight. And also it is also provided unlimited storage to Google Pixel Phone users which I do not have.

I read an article which says Google's possible motive of killing their unlimited storage on Google Photos is "aimed to help Google convince more people to get a paid Google One subscription that brings cloud storage for Google Photos, along with Google Drive and Gmail, of up to 30TB space"

Therefore, I suggest Google to emulate the IDrive by returning the unlimited storage feature of just Google Photos at least with just a yearly subscription in Google One so that I can still be active with Google Photos and use its privileges. So that they can deal with their rival cloud storage provider. People definitely can agree with my stand. Keep the subscription for Google Drive as it is but please, I suggest making Google Photos unlimited once again with just a yearly subscription. A free user will use their 15 GB of free storage, but when they subscribe to Google Photos, they will receive unlimited storage.

This will allow Google to prove which photo storage is better. I believe that Google can still able to beat IDrive Photos with its more features but how will they go to beat IDrive Photos in terms of storage subscription provision? Google Photos provides limited storage while IDrive provides unlimited storage with a yearly subscription.

If Google is still firm on its decision of keeping Google Photos as it is today, well I suggest Google help IDrive to improve their IDrive Photos app by adding lots of features there that Google Photos have.

Or exempt the EMAILS from the storage quota. Because sending and receiving EMAILS are very much important to every Internet user or to have an optional auto-deletion (move to trash) feature for sent and received emails that are not favourited within months.

Google Photos provides a lot of features of image manager like editing, albums, highlights, and selecting folders to backup, but it has limited storage until 2 terabytes with 4,000 Php per year. While IDrive Photos has unlimited storage with a 10 USD yearly subscription that can upload images without losing its quality but has few features, only favouriting, no search-by-date, no manual backing-up, no albums, etc. I'm still struggling with which one will I choose. I have to choose only one once I got only 2 GB's left on my storage.

I hope this will be read by the creators of Google Storage as soon as possible as my time for decision between Google Photos and IDrive Photos is running out within a year.
